Getting to know Senior Painting Caretaker: Liam Hannon

As part of our “Getting to Know” series, today we’re speaking to Liam Hannon, who has been working with The Pioneer Group for over a year. Prior to his caretaker role, Liam worked as an estimator/surveyor for a couple of large nationwide maintenance companies. Over the years, he has mainly worked in the painting industry but has also has a role as a contracts manager, as well as a part-time football coach!

Here we find out more about Liam:

Tell us why you joined The Pioneer Group?

I was looking for a role closer to home with less travelling so I could spend more time with my family. I also wanted to work in a role which was more meaningful, to help the local community.

What does a typical day at work look like for you?

Currently I am overseeing the external painting programme of railings around the Castle Vale area. At the moment a typical day involves arrival at the estates office, checking emails and loading the necessary materials into the van to organise our painting programme. As we are currently a small team of just myself and Michael Sale, I am very hands-on painting all day.

Some days may differ when the weather stops us painting outside, so I catch up on admin work, such as ordering of materials, or we complete some internal painting projects.

How does your team help the communities that we work in?

The painting team helps keep the community looking fresh, clean and aesthetically pleasing. I believe that this helps keep the community happier, in the same way that a tidy home reduces people’s stress and improves their happiness.

What are some personal values that are important to you?

Integrity, loyalty, and being a hardworking person are especially important to me.

What motivates you to be your best self?

My two sons help motivate me to be the best role model that I can be.

When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up it was my dream to become a professional footballer. I’m not as quick as I used to be so I looked at roles where I could help others as this gives me just as much of a kick!

What is your favourite memory of being involved in your community?

I have played in local football teams and also helped the local community raise money for charities before now. With the recent pandemic, I have also joined a team of volunteers to help deliver food parcels and medicines to households in need during the COVID-19 lockdown. It’s been amazing to see everyone coming together to help and to personally know we are making a difference and the community is really gratifying.

What approach do you take to look after your mental wellbeing?

I exercise regularly and try to stick to a healthy diet (though I do like a few beers on a weekend!). I also make sure I take 30 minutes a day for myself, away from everyone, to chill and relax.

What is one item on your bucket list?

I want to at some point ride a racehorse.

Who is an inspirational individual you look up to?

My hardworking father as he has always helped me whenever needed. This quality is something I want to show to my boys, and they will hopefully follow in our footsteps.

How do you relax outside of work?

Play football, have few beers with friends and I’m currently learning to fish – but I’m not quite sure yet if it’s relaxing or frustrating!

What do you enjoy about being part of The Pioneer Group?

I like working for the community and trying to make a good difference helping others.
